What to know

Why "clean" is not a regulated word

Unlike "low sugar" or "gluten-free," the word "clean" has no FDA definition or legal threshold at all. The FDA regulates specific nutrient content claims like "low" and "free," as outlined by resources such as Michigan State University Extension, but vague marketing terms like "clean" or "natural" fall outside that system entirely. That means "clean-ingredient" here is our judgment call, not a government-verified label claim, and we try to be transparent about what we are actually looking for.

In practice, we favor bars with a short, recognizable ingredient list, whole-food protein and sweetener sources, and no artificial colors or preservatives, over bars that simply print the word "clean" on the label without changing much about the formula.

A short ingredient list is not automatically better nutrition, though. Added fiber, vitamins, and functional ingredients can lengthen a label without making it worse.

What to check before you buy

  • Read the ingredient list yourself rather than trusting the word "clean" on the front, since it is not a regulated claim.
  • Recognizable, whole-food ingredients such as nuts, oats, and dates near the top of the list are a better signal than the marketing copy.
  • A longer ingredient list is not automatically worse. Added fiber or micronutrients can be a reasonable, legitimate reason for extra ingredients.

Frequently asked questions

How did you pick these bars?

Every bar was bought at retail and scored 1–10 on four pillars: macro profile, taste and flavor accuracy, texture and mouthfeel, and ingredients and digestibility. The overall score is the straight average. Scores and rankings are never for sale.

What do the score badges mean?

9.0 and above earns Top Pick. 7.5–8.9 is Recommended. 6.0–7.4 gets a Caution, usually a macro or ingredient trade-off worth knowing about. Below 6.0, we tell you to skip it.

Is "clean ingredient" an official nutrition claim?

No. Unlike "low" or "free" claims, "clean" has no FDA definition or legal threshold.

What do you actually look for when calling a bar "clean"?

A short, recognizable ingredient list, whole-food sources, and no artificial colors or preservatives.

Does a short ingredient list mean better nutrition?

Not necessarily. Added fiber or micronutrients can lengthen a label for a good reason.
