What to know
How we actually judge taste
Best tasting is the most subjective category on this site, so we try to be transparent about how we score it rather than just asserting an opinion. Taste and flavor accuracy is one of our four scored pillars, weighted equally with macros, texture, and ingredients, and it specifically measures how close a bar tastes to the flavor printed on the wrapper, not just whether it tastes good in the abstract.
Texture plays a bigger role in perceived taste than most people expect. Fat content, moisture, and protein source all affect mouthfeel. Whey protein isolate can taste chalkier and drier than whey protein concentrate or a blended formula, which is part of why two bars with a similar flavor profile can taste completely different in the mouth.
We do not let price or brand reputation influence this score. A one dollar bar and a four dollar bar are held to the same taste standard.
What to check before you buy
- Read past the flavor name. Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough can mean very different things depending on the protein source and sweetener used.
- Protein source affects texture as much as flavor. If you have disliked whey-based bars before, a bar built on milk protein isolate or a plant blend may taste different enough to be worth trying.
- Our score reflects flavor accuracy specifically, not just general likability, so read the pros and cons on each bar's full review for the details behind the number.
