Four pillars, five bands each, zero guesswork. Here’s exactly what separates a 9 from a 6, and why the number on every review means the same thing every time.
Every bar page on this site shows three separate numbers: OUR SCORE (what we found when we tested it ourselves), READER SCORE (the live average from readers who left a review), and AMAZON (the buyer rating pulled from the product’s listing, checked and dated by hand). We keep them separate on purpose. A bar can nail our testing criteria and still split real buyers down the middle, or the other way around, and folding that disagreement into one number would just hide it.
This page is about the first one: how OUR SCORE gets built, pillar by pillar.
Every bar we test gets scored 1–10 on four pillars: Macro Profile, Taste & Flavor Accuracy, Texture & Mouthfeel, and Ingredients & Digestibility. The overall score is a straight average of the four, no pillar weighted above another. A bar can’t buy its way to a high score by nailing macros while tasting like chalk, and it can’t taste its way past a genuinely rough ingredient list either.
| Score | Verdict |
|---|---|
| 9.0–10 | Top Pick |
| 7.5–8.9 | Recommended |
| 6.0–7.4 | Caution |
| Below 6.0 | Avoid |
Protein-to-calorie ratio, sugar and carb quality, and whether the fat is doing real nutritional work or just filling space.
| Score | What it means |
|---|---|
| 9–10 | Best-in-class ratio. Protein dominates the label, sugar is minimal or zero, no macro compromise anywhere. |
| 7–8 | Strong ratio. High protein per calorie, sugar and fat genuinely kept in check. |
| 5–6 | Reasonable, unremarkable. Protein is adequate for the calories, nothing stands out either way. |
| 3–4 | Mediocre ratio. Noticeable sugar, sugar alcohols, or fat load relative to the protein delivered. |
| 1–2 | Low protein for the calories or sugar. A “protein bar” in name only. |
Does the birthday-cake bar taste like cake, or like sweet chemicals? Aftertaste and sweetness balance, judged without mercy.
| Score | What it means |
|---|---|
| 9–10 | Tastes like the real thing it’s mimicking. No “protein bar aftertaste,” no disclaimers needed. |
| 7–8 | Genuinely tasty. Flavor is accurate to what’s advertised, sweetener is well-balanced. |
| 5–6 | Does the job. Recognizable but generic, you’d eat it, you wouldn’t crave it. |
| 3–4 | Off. Noticeably artificial, one-note, or a weak imitation of the advertised flavor. |
| 1–2 | Unpleasant or barely recognizable. Sweetener dominates, sometimes bitterly. |
The jaw-workout factor, dryness, and whether coatings melt in your mouth or flake off in the wrapper.
| Score | What it means |
|---|---|
| 9–10 | Indistinguishable from a real candy bar or baked good’s texture. |
| 7–8 | Smooth or pleasantly chewy. No grit, and any coating doesn’t feel waxy or separate from the bar. |
| 5–6 | Acceptable but generic. Slightly dry or slightly gummy, nothing memorable either way. |
| 3–4 | Dense, dry, or sandy. Feels “supplement-y” rather than food-like. |
| 1–2 | Chalky or gritty. Obvious protein-powder texture, may need water to get down. |
Protein source quality, GI comfort (looking at you, maltitol), and how recognizable the label reads.
| Score | What it means |
|---|---|
| 9–10 | Short, recognizable ingredient list. No sugar-alcohol overload, sits well digestively. |
| 7–8 | Clean-leaning list. Minimal artificial additives, well-tolerated protein source. |
| 5–6 | Standard for the category. A mix of recognizable and processed ingredients, generally fine in one serving. |
| 3–4 | Heavy on processed additives. Noticeable GI-distress risk for an average person. |
| 1–2 | Long filler list, or a known GI-distress ingredient with no warning on the label. |
A bare 1–10 scale drifts. Without a fixed description of what a 7 tastes or feels like, the same bar could score differently in March versus August just because the tester’s baseline shifted. Every score on this site gets matched to the closest band above before it’s assigned, which is also why a bar we re-test months later rarely jumps more than a point.
● Editorial policy
Sponsored placements are allowed on this site and always labeled clearly, dashed border, “SPONSORED” tag, but they are never scored and never appear in a ranking. If a bar shows up in a Top 10, it earned that number through the exact same rubric as every other listing on the page.
Every review breaks its score down by all four pillars, hover the (i) next to any pillar to see the exact band it hit.
