What to know
Why price per bar is the wrong number to compare
Comparing bars by price per bar alone is misleading, because a cheaper bar with 10 grams of protein is not actually a better deal than a pricier bar with 25 grams. The number that actually matters is price per gram of protein, and it is worth calculating yourself rather than trusting whichever bar happens to look cheapest on the shelf.
Bulk buying, boxes of 12 versus single bars from a convenience store, usually brings the real cost down significantly, so where you buy matters as much as which bar you buy.
We list price per bar for every bar in this ranking, and we score ingredients and macros independently of price, so a cheap bar can still score well if the nutrition and taste hold up.
What to check before you buy
- Calculate price divided by grams of protein, not just the sticker price on the box, to compare bars fairly.
- Buy in bulk where possible. Multi-packs are almost always cheaper per bar than single bars from a convenience store or gas station.
- A lower price sometimes means a shorter, more processed ingredient list, so check the ingredients as well as the protein count. Our clean-ingredient rankings are worth cross-checking if that matters to you.
