What to know
What actually makes a bar crunchy
Crunch usually comes from puffed grains, rice crisps, or a baked rather than no-bake format, all of which lower the overall moisture content compared to a chewy bar. Lower moisture is also part of why crunchy bars often hold their texture longer on the shelf before opening.
The tradeoff is that crunchy bars can dry out and taste stale faster once opened, since they start with less moisture to begin with.
We score texture and mouthfeel independently from flavor for every bar in this ranking.
What to check before you buy
- Baked, no-bake, and puffed-grain formats all produce different degrees of crunch. Check which one a bar uses if crunch matters a lot to you.
- Crunchy bars can go stale faster once the package is opened, so eat them within a day or two of opening if crispness matters.
- Check our texture score specifically, since a bar can taste great and still miss on crunch, or the reverse.
